Write the abstract before the paper

An abstract you cannot write is a paper you cannot write. Writing it first, with placeholder numbers where you do not have results, forces the one question that decides everything: do you have a finding, or a direction?

A finding has a subject, a verb, and a number: "treatment raised survival by 40 percent". A direction hedges: "we explore how treatment may influence outcomes". If every attempt at your finding sentence comes out as a direction, that is not a writing problem, it is a signal that the result is not there yet, and you have learned it while you can still design for it instead of discovering it in review.

A strong abstract makes five moves in order: the problem and why it matters, what you did, what you found with a number, what it means, and one honest line on the limit. Cut every sentence that only announces the topic.
