Start with the title of a known paper and record its identifier from the publisher. Then write down the problem, method, population, and outcome described in its abstract. Failure pattern: the synonym trap. A field may describe the same method differently over time. If a known older paper disappears from your topic search, compare its title and abstract with the newer paper. Add a relevant alternative term, rerun the search, and inspect whether the new results address the same research question. Extra hits alone do not show improvement.

Failure pattern: the access shortcut. Restricting a search to immediately available full text can change which studies you see. If the research question requires a broader evidence base, identify the needed records first and resolve access through legitimate channels. Do not quietly redefine the evidence question around the papers that are easiest to download.

Evidence basis and limitations

Keep the test papers separate from the final included evidence. A methods section should explain the actual search strategy if reproducibility matters. References should point to the source that supports the claim, and a conclusion should reflect the limits of that source. Inspect the underlying data and controls before using a result to justify a broad assertion.

When a search supports a manuscript in progress, the next job is checking whether its citations justify the argument.
