Quick answer: Choose an academic article database by the research job, not by a universal ranking. PubMed is strong for biomedical discovery, Crossref for DOI and metadata verification, DOAJ for vetted open-access journals, Google Scholar for broad citation chasing, and Scopus or Web of Science for curated citation analysis when you have access.

No universal winner exists. A practical search often combines a discipline database, a citation-chasing tool, and a metadata or full-text verification route.

Separate four research jobs

Discovery asks which records might answer the question. Verification checks identity, version, DOI, journal, correction, or retraction status. Coverage assessment asks what the database systematically includes or omits. Retrieval asks whether you can access the lawful full text.

One interface may help with several jobs but rarely completes all four. Finding a PDF does not verify the version of record. Finding a DOI does not prove peer review. Seeing a cited-by count does not establish complete citation coverage.

Build a minimum search stack

  1. Choose the strongest discipline index available for the topic.
  2. Translate the research question into concepts, synonyms, controlled vocabulary, and exclusions.
  3. Run a broad discovery search and inspect irrelevant results to refine terms.
  4. Use backward and forward citation chasing on a small set of relevant records.
  5. Verify DOI, publication type, version, corrections, and access route.
  6. Record database, platform, query, filters, and date when reproducibility matters.

Worked example: a biomedical methods question

Suppose the question concerns wearable-sensor validation in adults with Parkinson's disease. Start with PubMed for biomedical indexing and publication types. Add a multidisciplinary citation database if access permits because engineering validation papers may sit outside core clinical indexing. Use Google Scholar for citation chasing and repository leads, then Crossref or the publisher record to verify DOI and version.

A search of only Google Scholar may be broad but hard to reproduce. A search of only PubMed may miss relevant engineering literature. The combined stack follows the evidence boundary rather than a brand preference.

Know when to use a specialist database

Field-specific controlled vocabulary and indexing can materially improve a search. Examples include discipline indexes for medicine, psychology, education, economics, engineering, chemistry, and agriculture. Ask a subject librarian which database and thesaurus fit the question, especially for a systematic or scoping review.

For patent, trial, dataset, preprint, thesis, or grant searches, use the record system that owns that document type. Academic article databases are not complete substitutes for registries and repositories.

Shortlist rule

For an ordinary manuscript, shortlist one discipline database, one citation-chasing route, and one metadata or access-verification route. For evidence synthesis, follow a protocol and librarian-informed multi-database strategy. Stop adding databases when the added source no longer changes the evidence set or conclusion—and document how you made that judgment.

Use this shortlist for ordinary discovery. Think twice if the project is a systematic review, a regulatory search, or another task that requires a protocol, specialist databases, and expert information support.
