In our pre-submission review work: connect the brain result to cognition

In our Manusights journal-fit audits, the recurring Brain and Cognition issue is a split manuscript: one section reports cognitive performance, another reports a brain or neuropsychology measure, but the paper does not prove that the two findings answer one question. The journal fit becomes much stronger when the introduction names the cognitive construct, the methods measure it directly, and the results sequence explains why the brain or neuropsychology evidence changes interpretation of that construct.

In our pre-submission review work with Brain and Cognition-style manuscripts, this specific failure pattern is usually visible before the results section: the abstract claims a brain-cognition relationship, but the methods describe a task, population, or neural measure without stating the dependency between them. We audit each claim by tracing the title, abstract, methods, figures, results, and conclusion as one chain. If one component cannot explain how the cognitive construct is measured or how the brain result changes the interpretation, the claim is not yet review-stable.

Use this repair sequence before upload:

  1. Replace broad “brain function” language with the specific cognitive process.
  2. State why the task, population, or clinical context is the right test of that process.
  3. Put the brain and behavior findings in a dependency order, not a side-by-side list.

The strongest version is often more modest but more reviewable. It makes the claim easy to trace from construct to measurement to inference.

These patterns focus on manuscript components that reviewers can inspect: title, abstract, methods, task description, figures, results order, and conclusion. The aim is not to make the paper sound larger. It is to make the brain-cognition owner traceable enough that the journal fit is credible.

The non-obvious repair is to make the paper narrower. A draft that claims “neural mechanisms of cognition” often becomes more credible when it states one construct, one tested condition, one inference boundary, and one untested alternative. That smaller claim is easier for reviewers to evaluate and harder for a search snippet or generic publisher page to teach.
