Expected output: one provisional answer, three to five supporting claims, the evidence needed for each, and one credible alternative explanation. That is enough to start research without pretending the conclusion is already fixed.
Build a claim-to-evidence map
Create the argument before you create section prose. For every claim, record the evidence that would support it, the strongest competing explanation, and the limit you will acknowledge.

This map is not the outline. It is the diagnostic layer that tells you whether an outline has something defensible to organize.
Research in passes
First, run a scoping pass to learn the field's vocabulary, major disagreements, and source types. Second, run a focused pass for the claims in your map. Third, run an adversarial pass for counterevidence, boundary cases, retractions, corrections, and methods criticism.
Record bibliographic details as you go. For each source, note why it is relevant, what claim it can support, what it cannot support, and whether you read the primary work or only a summary. A citation manager can reduce clerical errors, but it cannot decide whether a source actually entails your sentence.
Draft in dependency order
For an empirical paper, a useful working order is often methods, results, discussion, introduction, conclusion, and abstract. The exact order can change by discipline, but the dependency remains: the introduction promises a question, the methods define what can be learned, the results report what was observed, and the discussion must not outrun those observations.
For a humanities or conceptual paper, draft the evidence-bearing analytical sections first. Then write the introduction around the argument you actually made rather than the one you imagined before close reading.
Worked example: from topic to paper spine
Broad topic: remote work and productivity.
Weak question: Is remote work good?
Decision-sized question: Among software teams using the same delivery metric, how does a hybrid schedule change cycle time over six months, and which team conditions modify that relationship?
Provisional paper spine: define the team sample and comparison, show the cycle-time result with uncertainty, test workload and team-tenure alternatives, explain where the result does not travel, then state what managers can and cannot infer.
The improvement is not fancier wording. The revised question identifies a population, comparison, outcome, window, and moderation problem that the paper can actually investigate.
Audit the question, evidence chain, and conclusion together.
Revise at three levels
Argument pass. Hide the prose and inspect only the claims, evidence, counterevidence, and limitations. If a claim has no evidence owner, narrow it or remove it.
Section pass. Give each section one job. The introduction establishes the problem and question; methods establish the inferential boundary; results expose evidence; discussion interprets without relabeling speculation as a finding.
Sentence pass. Only after the first two passes should you improve transitions, remove ambiguity, standardize terms, and proofread citations. Sentence polish cannot rescue a missing comparison or an unsupported conclusion.
