Expected output: a saved journal-policy link, the document's exact content type, one supporting index or library record when available, and a confidence judgment. Do not reduce the result to a yes/no guess when evidence conflicts.
Start with the article type
Open the article landing page and issue table of contents. Look for labels such as Research Article, Original Article, Review, Systematic Review, Editorial, Commentary, News, Letter, Protocol, Correction, or Preprint.
A journal can be peer reviewed while a particular item is not externally peer reviewed. Editorials and news are common examples. Letters and reviews vary by journal. That is why checking only the journal title can produce a false positive.
Confirm the journal's policy
Search the journal site for “peer review,” “editorial process,” or “information for authors.” Read the policy closely enough to see which content types it covers. A statement that the journal is scholarly or that editors evaluate submissions is not automatically a promise of external peer review for every item.
When the publisher page is unavailable or vague, use your library's journal directory or ask a librarian. Preserve the URL or record you relied on so another reader can reproduce the check.
Treat database filters as evidence, not magic
Many library databases offer a peer-reviewed or scholarly-journal limiter. The limiter is useful, but the final record may still include non-article material from a peer-reviewed journal. Inspect the content type after filtering.
Google Scholar is a discovery engine, not a peer-review certification service. PubMed is a biomedical literature database, not a universal “peer reviewed only” filter. Repository hosting, PDF design, author credentials, and citation count also do not establish the editorial process.
Worked example: a convincing false positive
You find a polished PDF with a DOI, academic affiliations, references, and a journal masthead. The journal policy says it uses peer review, but the document is labeled Editorial in the issue contents. The correct conclusion is not “peer reviewed because the journal is.” Record it as an editorial unless the journal explicitly states that this article type receives external peer review.
Now change one detail: the document is labeled Original Research, the journal policy describes external review for research articles, and a trusted library record classifies the journal as refereed. That combination supports a high-confidence peer-reviewed classification.

Red flags that do not settle the question alone
Poor copyediting, a fast timeline, a low citation count, an unfamiliar publisher, or an open-access model can prompt further checking, but none alone proves that peer review was absent. Conversely, famous branding, a high metric, polished design, and a long reference list do not prove that a specific item was reviewed.
The defensible standard is process evidence tied to the document type.
Distinguish peer review from nearby labels
“Scholarly,” “academic,” “research,” “indexed,” and “peer reviewed” answer different questions. A scholarly book chapter may be academically valuable without being a journal article. A preprint may report original research without having completed journal peer review. A journal may be indexed in one database while a particular item is an editorial. Record the label you can support instead of treating the terms as interchangeable.
The same caution applies to systematic reviews and review articles. The word “review” in the content type describes a synthesis of literature; it does not itself document the editorial process. Verify the journal policy and that article type just as you would for original research.

Check version and correction status
After identifying a peer-reviewed version of record, check whether the article has a correction, expression of concern, retraction, or later version. Peer review is not a permanent warranty that every claim is correct. It describes an editorial process before publication, while post-publication notices can materially change how the work should be used.
Use the DOI and publisher landing page to distinguish the version of record from a preprint, accepted manuscript, repository copy, or supplementary file. If you cite a repository copy because it is accessible, preserve the version-of-record identity and disclose the version when that distinction matters.
Record a reproducible verdict
For coursework or a manuscript evidence ledger, save a short note such as:
