How to Write the Discussion Section of a Research Paper

Quick answer: Write the Discussion by stating the study's answer, showing which Results support it, testing plausible alternative explanations, comparing the answer with prior evidence, naming limitations at the level they affect inference, and ending with a bounded consequence. Do not repeat the Results in prose or introduce a stronger claim than the design can carry.

Start from a result-to-claim map

Before writing paragraphs, list the primary question, main result, supported claim, nearest alternative explanation, and strongest limitation. The main result should answer the question stated in the Introduction. If it does not, repair the manuscript's through-line before styling the Discussion.

Rank findings by inferential weight. A primary outcome with prespecified analysis should not be buried beneath exploratory subgroup patterns. Negative and mixed findings belong in the interpretation when they change the answer.

Worked example: narrow the claim as evidence changes

Imagine a fictional observational study in which neighborhoods with more tree canopy had lower afternoon air temperatures after adjustment for built density and elevation.

Too strong: “Increasing urban tree canopy reduces heat exposure and should be adopted by all cities.”

Evidence-matched opening: “Greater block-level tree canopy was associated with lower afternoon air temperature across the monitored neighborhoods after adjustment for measured built-environment features. The result supports canopy as a planning indicator, but the observational design does not isolate the effect of planting trees or establish the same relationship in other climates.”

The stronger version answers the question, names the analysis boundary, and distinguishes a planning indicator from a causal intervention. The next paragraph can test residual confounding, measurement placement, season, and neighborhood selection as alternatives.

Compare prior work by decision, not citation count

Group previous studies by the reason their answers differ: population, measurement, intervention, comparator, analysis, context, or follow-up. Then state whether the new study confirms, narrows, contradicts, or explains that pattern.

Avoid a sentence chain where every paragraph begins “Our finding is consistent with.” Agreement is not an interpretation. Tell the reader why the evidence aligns and what boundary remains.

Make limitations change the claim

A useful limitation has three parts: the vulnerability, the direction or type of uncertainty it creates, and the resulting claim boundary. “This study has several limitations” followed by a list does not show whether the conclusion survives.

For example: “Sensors were concentrated near public infrastructure, so exposure estimates may underrepresent blocks without municipal monitoring. The association should not be generalized to all neighborhoods without additional sampling.” That limitation changes the reach of the conclusion.

Review the Discussion's claim boundaries after the main result and alternatives are explicit.

  • The conclusion does not introduce a new result or recommendation.
  • The abstract and Discussion state compatible answers.

Submit if, and think twice if

Submit if the interpretation can be traced backward. Mark the main claim, each mechanism, each comparison with prior work, and each recommendation. Beside every sentence, write the supporting result or source. A sentence with no evidence path is either context, speculation that needs a label, or material to remove.

Think twice if limitations leave the conclusion unchanged. Rank limitations by how strongly they affect identification, measurement, precision, selection, or generalization. Rewrite the conclusion under the most plausible adverse interpretation. If the same broad claim survives every limitation untouched, the limitations section is probably ceremonial.

Hold if the Discussion resolves an alternative the study did not test. A preferred mechanism may be biologically plausible yet remain one of several explanations. State which result favors it, which evidence is indirect, and what experiment would distinguish it. Do not turn plausibility into demonstration.

Check the manuscript's claim ladder. The title, abstract conclusion, Discussion opening, limitations, and final paragraph should use compatible verbs and populations. Association should not become effect; one setting should not become all settings; a surrogate should not become a patient outcome.
