Quick answer: Submit to Elsevier's Journal of Macroeconomics when the paper changes how a macroeconomic mechanism, policy, forecast, or empirical relationship should be understood, and the identification or theoretical comparison supports that change. A country application with no broader macroeconomic lesson is a weaker fit.
Evidence basis: We reviewed the official journal page, guide for authors, and Editorial Manager route on August 29, 2026. Publisher facts are sourced; the decision tools below are Manusights judgment.
Match the contribution to the journal's reader job
Paper type | Decision-relevant evidence | Weak-fit signal |
|---|---|---|
Causal empirical paper | Credible counterfactual, pre-trends or diagnostics, mechanism, and external boundary | A coefficient is interpreted as policy without identification support |
Structural or DSGE model | Transparent mechanisms, discipline from data, comparison, and policy experiment | Additional frictions improve fit without changing understanding |
Time-series or forecasting paper | Real-time or pseudo-out-of-sample design, strong benchmarks, revisions, and uncertainty | In-sample accuracy carries the practical claim |
Theory paper | A clear macroeconomic puzzle, disciplined assumptions, comparative statics, and welfare logic | The result follows from an assumption with no economic interpretation |
The official scope includes growth, fluctuations, monetary and fiscal policy, political macroeconomics, exchange rates, open economies, inequality, and forecasting. Breadth does not remove the contribution test: the paper still needs a lesson that travels beyond its dataset or calibration.
Construct a claim-identification ledger
For each headline result, record the estimand or theoretical object, the variation or assumption that identifies it, the most credible alternative explanation, and the population or regime to which it applies.
Question | Evidence to show | Overclaim to avoid |
|---|---|---|
What changed? | Magnitude, uncertainty, timing, and economic significance | Treating statistical significance as macroeconomic importance |
Why did it change? | Mechanism tests or model discipline | Naming a channel that the design cannot distinguish |
Compared with what? | Current benchmarks and nested alternatives | Beating an intentionally weak baseline |
Where does it travel? | Institutional, time, country, or state-dependence boundary | Presenting one policy episode as universal |
Worked example: a fiscal multiplier estimate
A draft estimates a large output response after spending shocks and calls it a general fiscal multiplier. A stronger submission distinguishes anticipated from unanticipated policy, tests pre-trends and instrument relevance, reports state dependence, and explains the institutions represented in the sample. The revised claim may be smaller, but readers can see exactly which policy question the estimate answers.
Three failure patterns in our source-backed review
In our editorial analysis of the current Journal of Macroeconomics scope and guide, we map each claimed contribution to the design, model, table, and limitation that supports it. This is a synthesis of public sources and manuscript logic, not a claim about private editorial preferences or an acceptance forecast.
This guide cannot predict acceptance or an editorial decision. Its purpose is to expose the evidence dependencies an author can verify before submission.
Journal of Macroeconomics country-newness pattern. The introduction treats a new country or period as the contribution, but the methods reproduce an established design and the discussion offers no broader macroeconomic mechanism. Repair it by stating what the setting identifies that prior settings could not and where the lesson should transfer.
Journal of Macroeconomics policy-leap pattern. A reduced-form coefficient or calibrated response becomes a policy recommendation without welfare, incidence, institutional, or equilibrium boundaries. Separate the empirical result from the policy mapping and show which assumption connects them.
Journal of Macroeconomics benchmark-lag pattern. The results compare a forecasting or structural model with outdated or weak alternatives. Rebuild the table under the same information set, tuning budget, sample, and revision vintage, then explain why any remaining gain changes a decision rather than only a metric.
We test the abstract and conclusion last. Each should preserve the population, period, regime, and uncertainty visible in the main results. If either section makes a broader claim, the package has a contradiction that formatting cannot fix.

Preserve anonymity and evidence consistency
The current guide describes double-anonymized review. Remove identity from the review manuscript and file metadata where instructed, while keeping the separate title page complete. Then reconcile equation numbering, variable definitions, sample dates, tables, appendices, code/data statements, funding, conflicts, and author declarations.
Audit identification, interpretation, and package consistency.
Build the review package around reproducible claims
Confirm the live portal fields before upload. The following author-side artifacts should be complete and mutually consistent first.
As applicable to the article type, reconcile the cover letter, data availability statement, ethics statement, conflicts of interest, author contributions, funding statement, supplementary files, and highlights. The guide reviewed here states no fixed main-text word limit and no fixed initial figure limit across all covered article types; recheck article-specific instructions before upload.
Required working artifact | Decision it supports | Hold signal |
|---|---|---|
Anonymized review manuscript | Independent evaluation without avoidable identity leakage | Names, acknowledgments, file metadata, or self-citations reveal identity contrary to live instructions |
Separate title-page material | Accurate authorship, affiliations, funding, conflicts, and contact details | The author list or contribution record differs across files |
Results reproduction bundle | Traceable tables, figures, estimation, calibration, and data transformations | A headline number cannot be regenerated from the locked analysis version |
Identification or model-assumption ledger | A visible bridge from variation or assumptions to the claim | The conclusion uses a causal or policy verb the design does not support |
Data, code, and disclosure statement | Honest access conditions and research transparency | The manuscript promises materials that are private, undocumented, or differently versioned |
Read the package in dependency order: policy interpretation depends on the estimated or modeled response; that response depends on identification or assumptions; those depend on data, institutional context, and the information set. A polished conclusion cannot repair a break lower in that chain.
Editorial process stage map
The official materials describe initial assessment and double-anonymized review, but they do not guarantee a paper-specific timeline. Use this map to prepare, not to predict status dates.
- Stage 1, portal intake: prove completeness, declarations, and anonymity.
- Stage 2, initial editorial assessment: expose macroeconomic ownership, contribution, and minimum design credibility.
- Stage 3, external review if invited: make identification, theory, robustness, and reproducibility challengeable.
- Stage 4, revision or decision: connect every response to evidence and an exact manuscript change.
Stage | Likely decision boundary | Author-side readiness check |
|---|---|---|
Portal intake | Complete files, declarations, and anonymization | PDF, title page, classifications, disclosures, and data statement agree |
Initial editorial assessment | Macroeconomic ownership, contribution, and minimum design credibility | The abstract states the macro question, comparison, and bounded result |
External review if invited | Identification, theory, robustness, interpretation, and reproducibility | The strongest alternative explanation and benchmark receive a direct test |
Revision or decision | Whether evidence resolves the identified concerns | A response matrix links each comment to evidence and an exact manuscript change |
Compare neighboring journal jobs before submitting
Venue direction | Best for | Stronger fit when | Reroute signal |
|---|---|---|---|
Journal of Macroeconomics | Explain a macroeconomic mechanism, policy, fluctuation, growth, or forecast | The macro lesson travels beyond one dataset or country | The contribution is mainly a modeling technique or narrow sector result |
Economic Modelling | Change an economic conclusion through a model or modeling method | Model construction, discipline, and sensitivity are central | The macro question matters more than the modeling contribution |
Journal of Monetary Economics | Advance a monetary, macro-financial, or related core question | The contribution targets that specialist research conversation | The paper needs a broader general-macroeconomics scope |
Applied Economics | Deliver a well-executed applied economic result across a broad topic range | The empirical application is the main value | The paper claims a general macro mechanism without enough evidence |
This table separates reader intent and does not rank journals. The correct owner is the venue whose audience needs the central result and whose current scope supports the submitted article type.
Prepare the upload in dependency order
- Confirm that the central result belongs to macroeconomics or monetary economics.
- Lock the claim-to-design and claim-to-model boundaries before editing prose.
- Reproduce every main number from the final code and data version.
- Prepare the anonymized manuscript and separate identifying material required by the live guide.
- Recheck highlights, classifications, keywords, data statements, disclosures, and any current submission fee.
- Inspect the generated PDF, then use the official Editorial Manager route.
Submit if
- The paper resolves a macroeconomic question with a defensible comparison.
- Identification or model assumptions are visible enough to challenge.
- Policy interpretation stays inside the evidence and institutional context.
- The anonymized review package and underlying results agree.
Think twice if
- The abstract presents a new dataset as the contribution but the macroeconomic lesson is unclear.
- The main results table shows forecast gains that disappear against modern or real-time benchmarks.
- A policy recommendation extends beyond the estimated population or regime.
- A field journal owns the paper's main reader more clearly.
