Worked example: a treatment material
A draft reports high contaminant removal in synthetic water. A stronger submission tests relevant natural-water matrices, identifies the controlling mechanism, compares against the closest practical treatment under matched conditions, accounts for regeneration and residuals, and states where performance should not transfer. The contribution is the defensible operating decision, not the maximum percentage.
Three Nature Water failure patterns
Water word, adjacent owner. Water appears in the application, but the reusable contribution belongs primarily to materials, catalysis, microbiology, or remote sensing. State what a water researcher can do or infer that the adjacent field owner would not supply.
Scale jump. Bench or local evidence is used to claim watershed, regional, or policy effects without a transfer model or boundary. Separate measured effects from modeled implications and expose the uncertainty between them.
Burden omission. A benefit is reported without energy, chemicals, residuals, infrastructure, cost, equity, or implementation constraints that could reverse the decision. Include the most decision-relevant tradeoff even when it weakens the headline.

What our source review changed
In our editorial analysis, the most useful current signal is the January 2026 Nature Water editorial “Clarifying our remit as we enter a new phase”. Chief Editor Fabio Pulizzi and the journal team do not turn scope into a keyword checklist; the journal's recent editorials repeatedly frame water as an integrated system. That changes the pre-submission test. A manuscript about a membrane, sensor, pathogen, model, or institution should show why the water-system consequence belongs in the main claim, not only in a final application paragraph.
We therefore reject two easier but weaker approaches. First, we do not use a target word count as a proxy for completeness; content-type limits are formatting constraints, while the scale-and-transfer chain is an evidence constraint. Second, we do not infer fit from sibling Nature journals. Nature Water's own current sources control the decision.
Run this six-row claim audit before the portal:
- Copy the broadest sentence from the abstract.
- Mark the exact figure, table, or analysis that supports it.
- Name the water-system boundary observed in that artifact.
- Name the larger boundary implied by the sentence.
- Write the transfer assumption connecting the two.
- Either add evidence for that assumption or narrow the sentence.
This audit is especially important for field-to-global, material-to-process, and model-to-policy claims. It produces a falsifiable hold decision: if the manuscript cannot state the transfer assumption without adding a new study, the current broad claim is not ready.
