If you are doing a systematic or scoping review, choose databases and document the full protocol before searching. Google Scholar can supplement that process, but its ranked result set is not a substitute for a reproducible database strategy.
Turn the question into concept blocks
Write the research question, then identify the concepts that must appear in an eligible paper. For example:

Start with the population and intervention. Add an outcome or design block only if the results are too broad. Overloading the first query can hide useful papers that use unexpected vocabulary.
Build and test the query
- Combine synonyms within a concept with OR.
- Combine concept groups with AND.
- Search a small result set and inspect relevant titles, abstracts, subject headings, and keywords.
- Add the vocabulary used by eligible papers.
- Apply date, language, human/animal, article-type, or peer-review filters only when justified.
- Save the exact query, platform, date, filters, and result count.
The first query is a vocabulary test. A zero-result query may be too narrow; a large result set is not automatically wrong if screening rules are clear.
Use filters as triage, not proof
Some library platforms label a source as peer reviewed or offer a peer-reviewed limiter. Others expose publication type or journal metadata. These features can reduce noise, but they can also be incomplete or platform-specific.
For every article you plan to cite, verify:
- the item is an article rather than an editorial, news item, protocol, preprint, thesis, conference abstract, or correction unless that type is intentionally eligible;
- the journal identity is clear;
- the publisher or journal describes the relevant content as peer reviewed;
- the year, volume, issue or article number, authors, and DOI match;
- the version you read is labelled correctly.
Audit the evidence set after discovery but before drafting conclusions.
Recover full text without losing version identity
Try these routes in order:
- your library's full-text resolver;
- the DOI or publisher landing page;
- PubMed Central or another recognized subject repository;
- an institutional repository;
- an author-posted manuscript with a clear version label.
Record whether you read the version of record, accepted manuscript, preprint, or another version. When versions differ, use the appropriate record for bibliographic facts and check whether the claim you cite changed.

Search beyond the first result set
Once you have one verified seed article:
- inspect its reference list for earlier evidence;
- use cited-by tools for later work;
- open similar-article recommendations;
- search distinctive author-used phrases;
- check relevant reviews for vocabulary and landmark studies;
- rerun the database query with newly learned terms.
Stop according to the project's method, not when the first page feels sufficient. A narrative overview and a systematic review have different stopping rules.
