Journal of Cleaner Production APC and Open Access: Current Elsevier Fee, Embargo, and What Authors Should Actually Check

The current official pages are enough to make the decision framework clear:

• the listed APC is USD 4,620
• JCP is still a hybrid journal
• the subscription route carries no APC
• the current embargo listed for subscription articles is 24 months
• current journal timing is 8 days to first decision and 145 days to acceptance

That 24-month embargo is the part many authors miss. If you do not need immediate gold OA and your funder permits delayed sharing, the subscription route remains financially cleaner. If you do need immediate compliance, the APC becomes a real planning line item.

For JCP, the cost decision is unusually tied to policy and embargo logic:

1. if the funder allows delayed repository release, subscription can still work
2. if the funder requires immediate OA, the APC matters
3. if your institution has Elsevier agreement coverage, the sticker price may not be your real price

The official editorial-news material matters more here than a guessed acceptance-rate number. JCP publishes at huge volume, but current official updates still describe rejection climbing and immediate triage getting tougher.

The year-over-year move is positive. Journal of Cleaner Production is up from 9.7 in 2023 to 10.0 in 2024. That supports the same practical reading the editorial updates suggest: JCP is still a leading sustainability venue, but one that is increasingly strict about whether the cleaner-production consequence is central.

In our pre-submission review work, the APC is not the main mistake authors make.

The common failure is false scope confidence. Authors often assume "sustainability-adjacent" is enough. It is not. JCP wants cleaner-production consequence, not just technical competence with a green paragraph added later.

High volume does not mean easy. The current official rejection reporting makes that explicit. Large output and hard screening can coexist.

The embargo changes the funding decision. Because the subscription route is free but delayed, authors should make the OA choice based on compliance and reach, not publisher marketing.

That is the right sequence:

1. confirm the paper really lives in the cleaner-production lane
2. decide whether the 24-month embargo is acceptable
3. then decide whether paying the APC is actually necessary
